Australian Shephard and Heeler Mix

Question
Matt, I know almost nothing of these dogs so far except my wife says she want one.  I have just started to research this type of dog.  My wife has stated that she heard that an Australian Shephard and Heeler Mix is what she wants.  Is there such a thing?  what does that mean in terms of the dog's demeanor, etc?  We are expecting in Aug our first child, any worries here?  Last thing, can you recommend where to purchase in Phoenix AZ?  We want to look in shelters, etc first. I do not personally care for pet stores.
Thanks for all your help, Tim

Answer
Ahh, where should I begin? First of all, a "heeler" is actually an Australian Cattle Dog, so if you want alot of info on them, search for that, not heeler :-).  And Australian Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix is possible, however it will be tough finding that exact mix.  Do some searches for Australian Shepherds (what I have) and you'll find lots of info, pictures, ect. Australian Shepherds, as well as Australian Cattle Dogs, have TONS of energy. You have to keep them occupied constantly, and give them plenty of exercise, as they were bred for herding sheep, cows, ect.  Australian Shepherds CAN be very good with children, if raised correctly, and from the right place.  Do more research, visit some dog shows (which I can find some in you area if you'd like, email me back), look at a bunch of dogs, talk to some breeders, ect, and email me back and I will be more than happy to find some good reputable breeders in your area.  Talk toyou soon,
Matt
