Question
I have a mixed breed ACD- she is almost 8 years old and half Jack Russell - She has a wonderful temperament- very sweet- my only problem is, and has been, that she pees everywhere. She does understand the concept to "go potty outside", and she often comes to tell me she needs to go out. But she uses this to go out for many reasons- and even when I have let her out numerous times, she still may go to another room and pee.
Is she marking territory? She is not spayed-
She used to love our cats- until they ganged up on her one day and trapped her in the bathroom- then  I saw a young male swagger towards her (like a scene from West Side Story)- and I put a stoop to it. Since then, she finally got over her fear- but is not quite so trusting with them!
She used to herd them into a corner and sit on them!
She ends up crated most of the time, because I don't know how else to handle it- and she hates being outside on a chain (we have a harness on her)- on a run line (like a clothes line- with a doghouse close by). She clearly would rather be inside with us- but I am at my wits end.

Answer
Hi Nancy, The first question for you that comes to mind is "Has a veterinarian checked her out?" There are several physical problems that could cause her to pee...besides the most common one called a UTI(urinary tract infection). Another scenario would be that when she feared the cats ganging up on her...she peed on the floor, more so due to fear than anything else. This may have created a pattern or "habit" that she has since continued with. Whatever the cause, after being deemed healthy by a vet...this is my advice. Pretend she is 8 weeks old....and crate train her, making certain the only time she has free house time is right after she has peed outside. Watch her intently in the house....and correct her if she starts to pee. At all other times, she will be either outside or in her crate. Buy a product called Nature's Miracle".....and use it even on old urine spots. Withinn 2 weeks she should be retrained. Hope this advice helps! Let me know.
