Question
I got a 12 weeks old ACD puppy from a farmer neighbour because it was exposed to cows by living in the barn and I need a dog to work around the farm as well as a companion animal.
He is very shy, it was hiding in a corner and hyperventilating and shaking when handle.   I suspect he had very little socialization with humans and I would like to start him well so he does not evolve into a fear biter and gain more confidence. all advices are welcomed.

Answer
Hi Marie, Socialization at an earlier age is critical...he should have been socialized properly and then sent to his new home at 7-8 weeks. Now he is 12 weeks, and you have your work cut out for you. But, there is hope. Start very slowly.....with very minor distrations. Put a lead on him, and let him drag it around. When he is used to it, attach it onto yourself....which will froce him to go with you whereever you go. Do not allow him to hide in corners, but do not do all of this too quickly. When he feels secure around you....let other people visit with him. When he is about 5-6 months, take him to an obedience class. I cannot guarantee that he will come out of this, but it is worth a try. If you do not see any improvement in a month or so, he may be shy all of his life. Hope this helps. Wendy
