Akita

I have a small american cocker spaniel almost 12 yrs old.Looking to adopt an Akita bitch.We had a boy Akita for over 12 years and he was brillient,super temprement,we had no other dogs.Will an Akita bitch of about 4 get on with my dog?.On first meeting she bite his head,he did retaliate and then they almost ignored each other.Brett then licked her face.The people said it was a good meet.I am worried that she wont take to him and attack him badly.Hubby wants to get a puppy so they will get to know each other before she grows huge.Can you help me,we both want to give a dog who needs a home a loving home

As we all know, most Akita's are very antisocial dogs.
Your husband is spot on by wanting to get an Akita puppy.
That way, at least she is able to learn proper socializing with other dogs. This lesson must be taught at their puppy stage as it is almost impossible for them to learn when they've grown up.

Unfortunately, the Akita you want to adopt - You don't know much about.
They can be very sly, sneaky creatures and can look as happy and placid as ever until close enough to attack (as I've had first hand experience witnessing the incident unfold).

Akita's are more solitary animals, finding comfort in solitude with their master's companionship.

It would not be wise to adopt this Akita. I know she almost bit Brett's head off, and that could be due to more than just showing dominance. It could also be utter annoyance, especially since she ignored him afterward.

I would also say it was a good meet, only because she didn't attack him further.


I strongly suggest finding another breed of dog. There are plenty other breeds out there who need loving homes.

However, if you are adamant about having this Akita, I can advise you on how to introduce them further when bringing her into your home.

Believe me, it will take months of hard work and dedication, sensibility and 24/7 surveillance, and even then, the outcome may not always be good.

Akita's are loyal, smart, witty dogs with plenty of love to give. They are how they are in terms of personality and temperament and it's the master's job to compromise.

But whatever your decision, remember that Akita's are very big responsibilities, as you already know, but even more so when adopting an adult dog.

It is not my call, but I suggest you either purchase a puppy or find another breed. If you didn't have another dog, I would give you the thumbs up.
