Question
Hi Rosie:
HOPE YOU CAN HELP................
we have just adopted a cat with a dirty habit!
he has been our cats best friend for 3 years and we love him too bits.however he has a spraying problem!BIG TIME!
hes a beautiful and good natured cat,nuetered,5 yrs old and has a history of flutd. He is currently in the pet hospital as a result of total blockage of the urinary tract....he almost died!
The owners of the cat have indicated that he does'nt go home at all, maybe once every 3-4 weeks
to eat and leave. He spends alot of time outdoors but if we are home he is here constantly.
Anyways the cat is currently in hospital....5 days now and the owner has decided that they do not want him anymore because he left them a long time ago.He is no longer their cat..
they said if they could'nt find a home for him they would send him to the spca
Obviously we don't want that as he is our cats best friend but he has a dirty habit and taking him on as my own is stressing me out for 2 reasons
how do we stop the spraying?HUGE!
and our cat is a spoiled boy and is used to his eating habits which would totally have to change if we adopt the other cat.
the other cat will be totally restricted to prescription food forever!
How do I manage that?
They are used too sharing treats, catnip etc.
I cannot live with a cat that sprays constantly.........any advice?
and I am concerned about how to delegate food...both are aggresive males!
I hope I am making sense.I have to tell the owner of the cat whether or not we will be adopting him by the time the cat gets out of hospital in 2 days or they will send this absolutely gorgeous cat to the s.p.c.a.!
Please give me some advice.....
Thanking you in advance
Laura

Answer
Hello Laura!  :o)

Wow...what a quandry!

There are a couple things I wanted to clarify before I suggest anything.

- Which cat is the one that's on prescription food?  Do you mean prescription as in a special type of food his vet prescribed?

- Has he sprayed around your territory, or was it something he did in THEIR household that they told you about?

- Has he been checked by a vet to rule out anything medical being behind him spraying?

- Did they have any other kitties?  If so, how many litterboxes did they have, if you know?  Also, what was the kitty's bathroom setup in general?  Did they use litterbox liners, hooded box, etc?

- Do you have any idea how old he was when he was neutered?

I'm sorry to give you a bit of a non-answer to start with, I just don't want to answer anything that won't work, and would rather be sure I understand the facts before progressing.  :o)

Okay, let me know about those things, and I will be able to better determine possibly what's behind the spraying so we can figure out which action will best handle it.

Until then, hugs to you guys!  :o)

P.S.  I will be on the lookout for your message and answer you right away.  It should be fine to let them know you can adopt the cutie...we'll figure out what's going on and whatever it is, there's an answer.  So, go for it, and in the meantime we'll figure out the easiest way to make him part of your family. :o)
