aggressive male kitten

Question
I have an indoor only 10 year old male neutered cat and in October, 2007 I adopted a male kitten.  My older cat just ignores the kitten.  He isn't mean to him, but doesn't seem to like him.  The kitten for months now will jump on the older cat and bite him.  He lays right on the older cat's back.  My older cat cries out, but will not fight back other than to smack a little at him.  I am going to neuter soon, but this has been going on from almost the beginning and doesn't seem to be puberty to me.  I think the kitten wants him to play, but he won't.  I squirted him a few times.  Lately, if I tell him no he does jump down.  It is obvious my older cat isn't happy about this.  Will it get any better?  What should I do?  Otherwise, the kitten is adorable and we all love him.  Neko's Momma

Answer
Robin,

First getting the kitten neutered will help a lot.

2nd, most older cats, especially males, do not like kittens. Your cat is 56 years old in human years and you got him a randy teenager to keep him company!

You should get a kitty friend his own age for the kitten to play kitty games with and cuddle with. Your older cat may tolerate the kitten, but most likely, will never like him or be his 'buddy'.

Getting a pet laser light is great for interactive play between the cats (you can get them at PetSmart, Petco, etc.). They get used to being together without having to touch, and they are not focused on each other, but on the 'little red bug'.

when you get the kitten neutered, the older cat may hiss and have fits because of the smells the kitten will bring home from the vet. He may think that the kitten is a new cat. Cats go by smell for recognizition and not sight. It only lasts a couple of days though.
