Question
Dear Becky,

I have 2 cats now that I am looking after and probably will be in the foreseable future. I have secured a good bond with both cats and hopefully given them a stable environment as possible. For the first 5 weeks I used to open the Window and let them out and had a litter tray which they used . Both cats seem to use that. I have recently last 2 weeks had a cat flap installed and they have been going outside to do their peeing and pooping. One cat is absolutely fine. The other cat Chalky i have noticed is going sometimes to the same area and leaving small puddles on the floor near to where the litter tray used to be. I am trying to encourage him to go outside which he appears to be doing.. Having read a certain amount of literature about spraying and peeing i see no evidence of him spraying. Chalky as apposed to the other cat seems to be more attached to me and will lick my fleece and purr away like mad. In the last 2.5 months with the exception of  acouple of one day he has an appetite and has always eat his food. One day and night he slept seemed very week and did not eat or want his food. (This may be because he had over exerted himself or had a fight with a cat outside. We do appear to have one cat close by that they sometimes fight with )Chalky has a brother Woody and they do lick each other but also they do fight a bit- however they do sleep in the same room together.  On the whole they seem quite happy and i do dot on them.

My question is :  I am in a quandry..?

1/ Could this puddle be an attention issue
or
2/ Now no litterbox although see evidence of peeing or spraying outside.

3/ Could it be this other cat , although when I see them together he is alert but does not seem to concerned .

4/  or is it the jealousy playing/ fighting with his brother and his peeing is related to attention seeking.

What can i do to solve this problem ..of puddles from 'chalky' which seem on the hole to be in the same corner .....  read all the literature and I must not punish chalky.. it happens now on aveage every other day.. Most of the literature i have read refers to a litter tray which I have now removed with the addition of a cat flap... one vet i know is against a litter tray in the house. I am trying to encourage all their toiletry activities to be outside.. certainly seems to be the case with 'woody' and on the whole chalky.. I SEE NO EVIDENCE OF SPRAYING . Chalky does his pooping outside..

Becky will be extremely grateful for your Input
Thank you..

Answer
Hi Steven!

I think Chalky is simply used to using a litterbox and is now very confused because it is no longer there.  Cats do not like change. I don't think this is an attention seeking problem, it is a stressful situation because the litter box has been removed.
Letting them go outside is dangerous and unhealthy.  They could get diseases from other cats and as you mentioned, fighting with other cats.  These cats will live longer if kept indoors.

God Bless,
Becky
