Answer
Cindy,

Sorry for the late response, but I'm preparing to take a vacation and have been extremely busy.  I hope by now that this problem has resolved itself or been resolved by the cat or the vet.  But if not, I am going to strongly suggest you get her to the vet.

Anytime a cat has something hanging out of it's vaginal opening after birth, that is not normal.  It's hard to say what it could be, but my guess would ber either a dead baby that never fully developed in utero, and therefore, it was never formed and never looked like a kitten, and instead looks more like a "blob" of blood and tissue; a piece or part of a placenta, since a placenta is delivered after every kitten; possibly a prolapsed uterus, or even other pieces of tissue.

I would NOT pull on it, because like you said, you don't want to hurt her, and if it's a prolapsed uterus or any other organ, pulling on it could start bleeding, and she could bleed to death.  Without knowing what it is, you need to take her to the vet so your vet can look at it and make a decision on how to remove it and determine if there's anything remaining in her that could be putting her at harm (retained placentas, retained dead kitten, etc).  She will likely need antibx, since it's been hanging outside her body and all the germs she's come in contact with are easily and readily able to enter into her body, and could easily lead to sepsis (all over body infection which can be fatal).

So please get her to the vet for a proper dx and decision of how and what to do with it.  I would not risk doing anything yourself as it's simply too dangerous for her if it's anything other than a piece of tissue that's not attached to anything.
