Spot on Dogs Eye

Question
My four-year-old blue-eyed husky/shelty mix developed a small black dot (size of a small lentil) in the lower portion of her eye (the blue part). No redness, swelling or oozing. It seems not to trouble her. It just wasn't there before. Is there anything I should be doing? What would cause this?

Answer
Kim,
I feel the black spot you are seeing is either a harmless skin growth common in aging dogs, or is related to the pigmentation itself. Dogs that are blued are more prone to have pigmentation disorders due genetics.
I would not be too concerned but just monitor it and note if you do see any swelling, discharge or if he increases in size shape of color. On her next vet check up discuss the spot with her veterinarian so he can take a look at it. I have two Harlequin Great Danes that both have "odd eyes" one blue and one brown and as they have gotten older I have noticed that they have acquired several small skin tag type, growths around their eyes. Again keep an eye on it and have her examined if you feel it may be bothering her, or as I said it shows any change. I hope this offers some insight. Please feel free to get back to me with any additional questions or concerns.
