Lab with Demodex mites; NuVet for Mange ; short-term Ivermectin:

I have a 3 year old chocolate lab with demodex that I am trying to treat without getting into the horrific chemicals that the vet wants to give him (Ivermectin) I am doing a bensol peroxide bath everyday, with a tea tree conditioner. And I am giving him different suppliments to boost his immun system such as echinacia, vitamin A E and C, MSM, and Zinc. I am really trying but I am not seening a whole lot of difference and every time he starts itching around his face he starts to bleed. I was wondering if you had any suggestions? I am really trying to help him but I am about ready to pull out my hair. I just want him to feel better. He is on an antibiotic to help with any sort of staff infection he might get too. WHat do I do?

Hi Carrie and Choc Lab kid... Oh, Demodex mange is a tough one!
The Ivermectin is sometimes the only choice... I know it is harsh but if he is that bad, it may be something to use "short-term".
You can also give some Immune support like the NuVET supplement, to help the system, while you are taking the Ivermectin.

I DO TRY TO HELP DOGS AVOID THE IVERMECTIN IF POSSIBLE.

Did you know that Ivermectin is the Product we use in Heart Worm meds?  For mange it is just much more of a dosage ...


Looks like you are doing a great job with the supplements but I would take him off of them and just use the NuVET and a Probiotic -

A good probiotic -  Acidophalus 1 billion CFUs - 1 per day - for at least 3 months ...  You can buy this probiotic at any health food store - it is for humans but pets can take it too.

Also, you may want to consider putting your Lab on some NuVET Plus Wafers - just (1 1/2) or 2 wafers per day -
Later on - YOU can go down to 1 per day....
( most dogs do just 1 per day)

Ok, If you want to avoid the Drugs you can try the NuVET but I think this kid may need the Short term Drug use.... Along with the antibiotics for secondary skin infections.
