Answer
It sounds as if he may be creating what is known as a Lick Granuloma. These are created by the constant licking of usually the joint area on the front leg and sometimes but not as often the back leg.

I have found that this is caused by a variety of things; one is nutritional and can often be eliminated by eliminating wheat, corn, soy, dairy and beef from everything that goes into his mouth. Another common factor here is, believe it or not, human stress. Dogs provide us with the emotional, stress relieving energy that helps us to cope with our daily lives; unfortunately, as it is keeping us from having health and other physiological symptoms as soon as we would have if we didn't have a dog, the dog often begins to exhibit a physiological symptom. If you visit my site; www.critteroil.com, you will find a section with articles that I have written. There are articles there which talk about this, as well as nutrition, allergies, etc and in one entitled 'A Sign Of The Times' I explain a relaxation technique that will help both you and your friend to cope together without the negative effects on your friend.  I have actually had one woman eliminate a cancer tumor with my Pet Energy Therapy technique.

In the mean time, since the licking can become a habit much like a person chewing their finger nails, an interesting little technique to stop the habit is to take a dab of Vicks Vapo Rub and rub it on your hands then rub it into the hair surrounding the area that he is licking (not on the sore its self). When he goes to lick, he gets a snoot full of Vicks and generally is turned off enough by the smell to quit licking.

I have an ointment that we make up in very small quantities ourselves called Super Goop which is the most healing ointment on the planet that will heal up the sore and soothe any irritation causing the vicious cycle of licking.  If you would like to try some, we are making a new batch Wednesday.  Call me at my shop: 727-327-2356 if you would like me to send you some. I'm not sure what the shipping would entail. Didn't I see somewhere that you are writing from out of the country, or was that the last questioner?

Well, that's about it.  I hope this gave you some answers.

Take care,
Sue
